Xiaomi is back again. Just three months after dropping the main Xiaomi 17 line, the 17T Pro arrives. Their release schedule? Chaotic. Who cares. Most of us just want the best deal on a phone that actually works.
I’ve spent days with it. It’s strong. Sure, the chip isn’t the most powerful. The cameras? Not quite flagship-tier. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra holds those crowns, as does the original 17 from MWC in March. But this device does one thing exceptionally well. It lasts.
The 7,000 mAh Monstruity
This thing has a huge battery. We are talking silicon-carbon technology, 7,000mAh of it. Xiaomi claims it lasts 1.88 typical days. Roughly 45 hours. That sounds impressive. Then I used it.
Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 950, it’s fast. Paired with 12GB RAM, you won’t notice a difference against the Snapdragon-powered 17 in daily use. Performance? Blazing. Boring? Yes, but in a good way.
I simply couldn’t get the battery to die.
Two days. I played PUBG Mobile. Took photos. Ran apps. By the end, 30% remained. I went from zero to 80% in 20 minutes with 100W charging. 50W wireless if you prefer that. The battery life isn’t a feature, it’s the entire point.
Camera and Display
It’s bigger than the standard 17. The 6.83-inch OLED screen hits 144Hz. Peak brightness? 3,500 nits. You can read it in direct sunlight without squinting. Looks fantastic.
The cameras are a step down from the 17, but still Leica-tuned. 50MP main. 50MP ultra-wide. 12MP telephoto. Wait. A 5x optical zoom? That’s new for a T-series. It pushes to 10x hybrid zoom. The shots were solid, comparable to the main model mostly. Except in low light with bright sources. Then artifacts ruined everything. Glaring lights become weird digital blobs. Annoying.
The front cam? 32MP. Respectable.
Software and Design
The hardware wins. The software fights you. Bloatware is here. A bunch of it. HyperOS? I don’t mind the interface itself, despite how blatantly it mimics iOS. But why pre-install junk I want to delete immediately? I choose my apps. Thank you very much.
Colors are deep. Blue. Violet. Black. I got Deep Blue. It’s rich enough that I didn’t want to hide it under the included grey case. Why does grey always come in the box?
Xiaomi also launched the smaller 17T. 6,590mAh battery. Dimensity 8500 chip. Less zoom. It’s the “lite” option if the Pro is too big for you.
Prices are steep. €899 for the Pro. €749 for the smaller T. Availability is currently unknown. A 45-hour battery is tempting. Will I pay for the software baggage? Maybe. Probably.
Who really checks their battery percentage anyway?
