How to Buy an HDTV Without Getting Stuck with Obsolete Tech

Walk into any electronics store right now and you are walking into a minefield of confusing acronyms and dying technologies. You aren’t just buying a screen. You are buying a gateway to a signal standard that is currently in flux. The options on the shelf generally fall into four buckets, and three of them are traps for the uninitiated buyer.

First, you’ll see Analog TV sets. These are relics. Unless you have a specific nostalgia project, ignore them.

Finally, there are Integrated HDTV sets. These combine the digital tuner and the HDTV display into one box. This seems convenient until you remember how fast TV standards change. You might pay for that integrated tuner, use it for a few years, and then watch it become obsolete as broadcast standards shift. You end up replacing the whole TV because the tuner got old, even if the screen is still fine.

The Component Strategy

The smart move, and the only one that makes sense for longevity, is to buy the components separately.

You need to assemble your own system:
* A 16:9 HDTV display capable of 720p and 1080i/p resolution.
* A separate digital receiver.
* An antenna.

Why do this? Because the HDTV display is the most expensive piece of the puzzle. It is likely to last ten years or more. The technology inside the receiver, however, changes faster than you can blink. By keeping them separate, you can swap out the receiver for a new one without throwing away a perfectly good $1,500 screen.

Receiver Options

Since you are buying a receiver separately, you have three main paths depending on where your signal comes from:

  1. Over-the-Air Broadcast: Buy a set-top box and a Yagi antenna. This is the traditional way to catch free local HDTV signals.
  2. Satellite: Buy a set-top box and a small satellite dish. This captures HDTV signals from space.
  3. Computer Hybrid: Buy a tuner board for your computer. This lets you use your hard disk as an HDTV storage device. You can then view signals on both your computer monitor and your main HDTV display.

The first option is often the cheapest entry point. The second offers more channel variety if you live in a rural area. The third is for tinkerers who want their TV experience integrated with their PC workflow.
