It has been around for years. It has been hyped. It has been criticized. And for a long time, it was basically a ghost town. But recently, there has been a push to revive it. The big claim? It’s secure. It’s legally recognized. It’s the future of postal service.
Is it actually useful? Or just expensive, clunky bureaucracy dressed up as innovation?
The Core Concept: Digital with a Legal Stamp
At its heart, an electronic letter is not an email. It’s not a WhatsApp message. It’s a hybrid.
Think of it as a digital envelope that goes through a certified process. The idea is to combine the convenience of the internet with the legal weight of traditional mail. In Germany, this is largely managed by the federal postal service, Deutsche Post, and other certified providers.

Deutsche Post is the big player. They offer De-Mail. It’s their flagship product. But they aren’t alone.

Is it actually secure?

Critics point out a fundamental flaw in the architecture. To process and route the messages, the data must be decrypted on the provider’s servers. The provider holds the keys. This creates a potential attack vector. If a hacker compromises the provider’s server, or if the provider is compelled to hand over data, your “encrypted” mail is readable.

There is one additional layer of security available for De-Mail users. For an extra 12 cents per message, you can buy the “Vertraulich” (Confidential) seal. This requires the recipient to enter a TAN (transaction authentication number) before the message can be opened. It adds a step. It adds friction. But it also adds a layer of authentication that standard De-Mail lacks.
The Bottom Line
The technology works. The legal framework is solid. The encryption is robust enough for most business and administrative purposes.
But adoption is the real story.
For the average German citizen, the effort to register, verify identity, and learn a new interface is significant. The hybrid option mitigates this somewhat, but it reintroduces the very inefficiency the digital system was supposed to eliminate.
