X Bans Deepfake Exploitation, Faces Continued EU Scrutiny

Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has moved to block the creation of sexually explicit deepfakes using its AI chatbot, Grok. The change comes in response to widespread outrage and a formal inquiry from the European Commission over users exploiting Grok’s image editing capabilities to digitally undress real people, including minors.

Deepfake Exploitation and EU Intervention

Grok recently allowed users to modify images of individuals in revealing outfits, leading to the non-consensual exploitation of real women and underage girls. The EU executive swiftly reacted, issuing a request for information and a document retention order to X, describing the situation as “appalling” and “disgusting.”

The platform’s new restrictions now prevent such editing, applying to all users, including those with paid subscriptions. However, the European Commission remains skeptical, stating it will “carefully assess” whether the changes are effective in protecting EU citizens.

Digital Services Act Enforcement

If X is found in breach of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), it could face fines up to 6% of its global annual turnover. This is not an empty threat: the Commission already fined X €120 million last month for violations related to account verification and advertising practices.

The DSA is a landmark law designed to hold tech platforms accountable for illegal content. It requires companies to remove harmful material quickly, protect user data, and be transparent about their algorithms.

Implications and Future Watch

X’s move suggests an attempt to preempt further EU action, but the Commission’s vigilance indicates that the platform will be under sustained scrutiny. This situation highlights a growing tension between tech companies and regulators over content moderation, AI ethics, and the enforcement of digital laws.

The EU’s aggressive stance underscores its commitment to protecting citizens online, and X will need to prove its compliance to avoid crippling financial penalties.
