Amazon-owned Ring is facing scrutiny over its new “Familiar Faces” feature, which uses artificial intelligence to recognize people on your property. While touted as a way to personalize notifications and enhance home security, critics warn that the tool may be dangerously invasive and violate privacy laws.
The controversy erupted after Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a digital rights advocacy group, raised serious concerns about Familiar Faces’ potential legal implications. The feature works by analyzing facial features of people captured on Ring cameras – without their knowledge or explicit consent. This practice directly contradicts the biometric privacy laws in several states, including Illinois and Texas, where users must actively agree to such scanning before it occurs.
Amazon claims that users can opt out of Familiar Faces within the app settings. However, this argument doesn’t address the core issue: individuals unknowingly captured by a Ring camera are not given any choice about having their faces scanned and stored in a database. This raises significant ethical and legal questions about informed consent in the age of ubiquitous surveillance technology.
Further fueling the fire, Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) sent Amazon a letter demanding they abandon Familiar Faces altogether, citing its potential to violate the privacy rights of non-consenting bystanders who might simply walk past a Ring camera.

In 2023, the Federal Trade Commission fined Ring over $5 million for allowing employees and contractors to view users’ private footage without proper authorization. Amazon’s response to the EFF’s inquiries highlights their reliance on cloud-based processing for Familiar Faces, claiming this minimizes privacy risks by keeping data secure within Amazon’s infrastructure. They also reiterate users’ ability to delete profiles and associated biometric data at any time. However, these assurances do little to quell anxieties surrounding how widespread facial recognition in everyday life will ultimately shape individual autonomy and societal norms around surveillance.
